Literature and Art on Palestine: A Story of Resilience and Representation
Culture and literature have long played a central role in how communities understand themselves and respond to adversity. Across different historical and political contexts, artistic expression can serve not only as reflection, but also as a form of resistance—preserving memory, shaping identity, and opening space for alternative narratives.
One of the most genuine ways to understand the development of modern Palestinian culture is through its literature and artistic production over the past century. These works reflect the Palestinian people’s challenges and traumas, while also expressing their hopes and imagination. At the same time, they highlight the important role of artists and writers as cultural representatives alongside political leaders.
In today’s context, often described as a political vacuum, new cultural voices continue to emerge in Palestine with resilience, creativity, and vision.

Hoten mot yttrandefriheten
Varje år hotas, fängslas och mördas författare, poeter och journalister världen över. Utrymmet för att uttrycka sig krymper på många håll – inte bara i totalitära stater, utan även i länder som betraktas som demokratier. Hanna Nordell från Svenska PEN belyser hoten mot yttrandefriheten, men lyfter också fram exempel på nätverk och initiativ som verkar för en öppnare och mer rättvis värld.

The lecture will discuss Creative Freedom under Dictatorship, presenting how systematic repression of free speech takes shape and how propaganda slowly got powerful recently in Myanmar. It will also talk about the alternative and experimental approaches artists have to adopt to reduce the risk of being targeted, as well as the urgent need for platforms and support systems to amplify the voices of emerging artists. The talk also reflects on how prolonged repression creates deep polarization and a culture of self-interest rather than solidarity within societies.
